Frequently Asked Questions

Who may run for Mayor in a Recall election?

Any Registered Berkeley voter who fullfills the nomination requirements in a timely manner may run for the office of mayor.

Note: Our City Clerk has not yet prepared the specific instructions for a candidate to file to run for Mayor in this Recall. The City Charter has changed somewhat since the last Recall, forty years ago. So even the general instructions will be a little different.

The City will return from the Holiday vacation on 2 January 2008. Stay tuned for how to run, and who may be considering running.

How will a new Mayor be elected?

The Mayoral election takes place at the same time as the Recall election:

  • First, you vote for or against the Recall of Mayor Tom Bates.

  • Then, if—and only if—you voted “Yes” for the Recall of Mayor Bates, you may vote for your choice of a new Mayor from those listed on the ballot.

When would the election occur?

Please see Recall Timeline for more detail.

We must first collect and verify the required signatures for 25% of the Registered Voters. Then the election will most likely occur at the time of the 3 June 2008 Primary.
